Conjunctivitis, commonly known as "pink eye," is an inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva, the thin, transparent membrane that covers the white part of the eye (sclera) and lines the inner surface of the eyelids. It can affect one or both eyes and is characterized by redness, itching, discharge, and sometimes blurred vision.

Types of Conjunctivitis:

Viral Conjunctivitis: Caused by viruses, often associated with the common cold. It is highly contagious and typically resolves on its own within 1-2 weeks.

Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae. It can cause a thick, yellow-green discharge and may require antibiotic treatment.

Triggered by allergens like pollen, dust, or pet dander. It often causes itching, redness, and watery discharge in both eyes. It is not contagious.

Caused by exposure to irritants such as chlorine in swimming pools, smoke, or air pollution. It can also result from contact with chemicals like cleaning products.

A type of allergic conjunctivitis often associated with prolonged contact lens use or eye prosthetics.

Treatment: Viral Conjunctivitis: Usually self-limiting. Cold compresses and artificial tears can help relieve symptoms. Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointments. Allergic Conjunctivitis: Managed with antihistamine eye drops, avoiding allergens, and using cold compresses. Chemical Conjunctivitis: Flushing the eye with saline or water and avoiding further exposure to the irritant.
